Wordpool Family Day Artist Opportunity

Wordpool Family Day Artist Opportunity

Background to Wordpool Festival

Blackpool’s Wordpool Festival is a partnership between Arts & Library Services, managed by Lynne Pattinson, Arts Development Officer and Clancy Mason, Reader Development Manager with the help of a dedicated steering group and team of volunteers. Our audiences are growing year on year and are always enthusiastic and welcoming.

Wordpool 2017 will be our 11th annual festival.

Our work with our communities, children and young people is an important part of the festival and we work very closely with community groups and schools to ensure that all of our communities are engaged with Wordpool. Our events are fun, challenging and accessible to all.

Wordpool Family Day: Saturday 1 July, 2017, 1-4pm. We are currently programming artists, storytellers and performers for the family day and we are seeking to add to this programme by inviting artists to develop new work or adapt existing work and provide an activity for the festival’s very popular Family Day in Stanley Park. This year’s theme is Animal Adventures.

What We Are Looking For

We have 2 opportunities for artists/designers/creative organisations/storytellers/performers to deliver interactive installations, practical workshops or immersive performances.

Opportunity 1: Wordpool Family Trail:

The activity will be aimed at children aged up to 12 and their families at the Family Day Animal Adventures activity trail in Stanley Park. We are creating a trail of activities in a variety of locations in the park. Depending on the type of activity, the activity can be programmed either outdoors in a variety of the Park’s beautiful spaces, in our performance area which will have a partially covered marquee or in the Animal Antics Creative Zone which will be in a marquee.  Families will be provided with a map and are expected to access each of the activities.

The Family Day activity should be a drop in that can engage family groups creatively for 10-20mins throughout the 3 hours (1-4pm) that the activity trail is open. Or it could be a 20-30 minute performance that would be repeated 3 times throughout the afternoon.

A budget of £300 per activity to include travel, materials, preparation and all expenses.

Opportunity 2:  Wordpool Summer Reading Challenge Zone:

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is themed Animal Agents and Blackpool Library Service is launching the Summer Reading Challenge during the Wordpool Family Day. Families can sign up for the challenge on the day.

We are seeking activity or performance that ties in with the Animal Agents theme which will be aimed at children aged up to 12 and will be situated in either the Animal Antics Creative Zone or in the performance area.

The activity should be a drop in that can engage family groups creatively for 10-20mins throughout the 3 hours (1-4pm) that the activity trail is open. Or it could be a 20-30 minute performance that would be repeated 3 times throughout the afternoon.

A budget of £300 per activity to include travel, materials, preparation and all expenses.

Opportunity 2 Extension

The Summer Reading Challenge has an activity programme delivered in a variety of Blackpool libraries over the summer holidays. Please indicate if you might be interested in adapting your activity so it could be delivered in up to four locations as part of the Summer Reading Challenge Programme. Activity or performance should last approx. 1 hour. This would potentially involve two separate days in the school summer holidays.

There is an additional budget of £300 for this extension work.

Practicalities

Please note that should the weather be fine, we will remove the walls from the marquee and have activities ‘spilling out’ into the surrounding area.  Although we do have limited marquee space available, materials if used should be suitable for any weather conditions and an age range of up to 12 years. There is little or no power supply. We expect large numbers to take part. Volunteers are provided to ensure that no one activity becomes too busy and volunteers can also help with the activity delivery if needed.

In your application, please indicate if you are applying for Opportunity 1 or 2. Describe your activity and indicate what age your activity is suitable for. Also indicate the skill levels your audience will require and the numbers that you can accommodate at any one session/performance.

Payment Schedule

100% of fee to be paid within 28 days of receipt of your invoice following successful completion of the activity.

Selection Process

All proposals will be considered carefully by a panel made up of members of the Wordpool Steering Group.

Our priorities for selection are:

  • That you can address all the practical issues such as budget, insurance and that you have identified any risks and have strategies to reduce / remove them.
  • You must have a bank account and be registered as self employed, Public Liability Insurance and be able to provide a UTR – (Unique Tax Reference).
  • You can provide evidence of previous experience of delivering creative activities with community groups and/or young people.
  • We are looking for fun and innovative approaches to delivery. Ideas that celebrate words and fit the Animal Adventure theme for the Family Day or the Summer Reading Challenge.

Application
